LED Light Emitting Diode（發(fā)光二極管）的縮寫。廣泛見于日常生活中，如家用電器的唆使燈，汽車后防霧燈等。LED的最明顯特點是應用壽命長，光電轉換效能高。
什么是LED？
在某些半導體材料的PN結中，注進的少數(shù)載流子與多數(shù)載流子復合時會把過剩的能量以光的情勢開釋出來，從而把電能直接轉換為光能。PN結加反向電壓，少數(shù)載流子難以注進，故不發(fā)光。這種利用注進式電致發(fā)光原理制作的二極管叫發(fā)光二極管，通稱LED。
LED的發(fā)光色彩和發(fā)光效率與制作LED的材料和工藝有關，目前廣泛應用的有紅、綠、藍三種。由于LED工作電壓低（僅1.5-3V），能主動發(fā)光且有必定亮度，亮度又能用電壓（或電流）調(diào)節(jié)，本身又耐沖擊、抗振動、壽命長（10萬小時），所以在大型的顯示設備中，目前尚無其他的顯示方法與LED顯示方法匹敵。
把紅色和綠色的LED放在一起作為一個像素制作的顯示屏叫雙基色屏或偽彩色屏；把紅、綠、藍三種LED管放在一起作為一個像素的顯示屏叫三基色屏或全彩屏。制作室內(nèi)LED屏的像素尺寸一般是2-10毫米，經(jīng)常采用把幾種能產(chǎn)生不同基色的LED管芯封裝成一體，室外LED屏的像素尺寸多為12-26毫米，每個像素由若干個各種單色LED組成，常見的成品稱像素筒或像素模塊。
